I-Agile™ -- The Intelligent-Agile Methodology
by Kevin S. Whisman, Director of Project Management, IDEAMATICS, Inc.

IDEAMATICS, Inc. through its numerous software development efforts, has historically based its software development approach on proven engineering principles to deliver integrated, web-based, enterprise process improvement.  Over the years, software development has evolved and IDEAMATICS’ methodologies have become increasingly efficient using the I-Agile™ methodology.  This evolution in methodologies can be summarized:
  • Waterfall approach – development is a step-by-step process with delivery at the “end of the line.”
  • Wagile – both Waterfall and Agile; moving either toward or away from Agile; usually smaller waterfall efforts sequentially strung together.
  • I-Agile™ – Intelligent-Agile is the hybrid approach that permanently moves away from Wagile, toward Agile while maintaining requisite governance and documentary components.
  • Pure Agile – methodologies where the development is completely iterative, incremental, and evolutionary; Agile development is THE framework.

So, why or how does Intelligent-Agile Methodology work for successful software development?
The I-Agile™ approach maximizes three major Agile framework focus areas to ensure faster times to delivery while meeting the customer’s needs and giving empowered teams the tools and support they need to succeed:
  • Empowered Teams: Create scrum teams, with empowered product owners, infused with outstanding scrum masters, developers, testers, and stakeholders communicating and working together effectively. The Product Owner is the empowered central point of product leadership and defines “done.”  The Scrum Master removes the roadblocks and maintains the communications across the team. With an interdisciplinary team empowered such as this, dedicated to the product, they thrive and succeed.

  • Maximize use of tools: Although The Manifesto for Agile Software Development (http://agilemanifesto.org/) clearly states, “Individuals and interactions over processes and tools,” there is need for effective use of development, testing, and deployment tools to ensure more efficiency that allows the team to produce a solution.  Collaborative tools are especially important in maintaining not only communication but also development velocity.

  • Be agile, not just Agile: Agile is framework but should not be so rigid a process that it cannot be flexible. Each project, each release, and each integration must have a process that fits the solution: agility or Agile-ness.
Sound hybrid Agile methodologies are the key to successful software development.  IDEAMATICS’ proven I-Agile™ approach shows that efficiency and flexibility can be achieved by focusing on important traits in the Agile framework while preserving essential controls for management and customer.
IDEAMATICS has successfully implemented the I-Agile™ methodology for large scale projects for Government agencies.  Future blogs will present greater details on this unique approach.

MAY 2020: IDEAMATICS earns the Microsoft Silver Partnership!

IDEAMATICS took another big step forward in our ongoing effort to grow our strategic partnerships and develop corporate competencies that provide value to our clients.  On 19 May 2020 we completed the path to achieve Silver certification as a member of Microsoft’s Partner Network!!

Microsoft Silver Partners receive an extra level of Microsoft support, which benefits IDEAMATICS’ clients at no extra cost. Working toward this certification also demonstrates our commitment to our existing clients with Microsoft solutions that we have developed.

To earn the Microsoft Silver certification, our development team fulfilled all the requirements in the Application Development competency area.  This demonstrates that our staff is proficient with Microsoft’s Application Development technologies, and it validates our technical capability to deliver Microsoft solutions (e.g., .NET applications).  IDEAMATICS’ partnership with Microsoft dates to 2000 when our development teams collaborated to develop a web application in a new (at the time) and exciting technology framework called ASP.Net. “Being recognized as a Microsoft Silver Partner validates our hard work and commitment in utilizing Microsoft products.  The knowledge and expertise we’ve gained through this process will pay dividends to new clients and the systems we provide them. " according to John Kaplar, IDEAMATICS Vice President of Software Solutions.

Our status as a Microsoft Silver Partner, our commitment to the Agile development process, our long-standing reputation as a respected custom software developer, and our growing COTS configuration portfolio all demonstrate IDEAMATICS’ commitment to delivering high quality solutions to our clients.
Mike Schwartz, IDEAMATICS Vice President, noted that "IDEAMATICS' attainment of the Microsoft Silver Partner level demonstrates our expertise and dedication to Microsoft technologies.  I’m especially proud of the excellent team we have at IDEAMATICS because this achievement was only possible with their experience and hard work.”

Angel is a U.S. Navy veteran and an experienced educator with more than 14 years as our lead software trainer and tester.  She is also a Certified Professional Scrum Master, holds a Master’s Certificate in Software Testing, a CompTIA Security+ CE certification and she is IAT Level II certified.  As the IDEAMATICS training portfolio has grown substantially over the past two years, Angel has proven her ability to lead our team of trainers and technical writers to develop and deliver high quality software training to our clients’ internal trainers and users.

Kevin joined the IDEAMATICS team in 2019 after establishing himself in a variety of increasingly challenging program and project management positions since he retired from the U.S. Navy in 2007.  He is a subject matter expert in Agile Management and Methodology, a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and will soon complete his Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.  His talented leadership of our Navy e-CRM project and experience with the Agile software development process make him the right choice to serve as our first Director of Project Management.  Kevin’s primary responsibility in this position is to identify and implement best practices across all IDEAMATICS’ operations to include a focus on people, processes, tools, and lessons learned/knowledge sharing.

By establishing these two new positions and filling them with our highly qualified information technology professionals IDEAMATICS has significantly enhanced its ability to combine Agile software development and training techniques to ensure the rapid, responsive results that our clients expect.

APRIL 2015 - CARPATHIA PUBLISHES A CASE STUDY ON IDEAMATICS, INC. SUPPORT TO THE U.S. COAST GUARD

To see the case study, please click here.

Carpathia, a leading provider of hybrid cloud services and managed hosting, highlighted IDEAMATICS support to the U.S. Coast Guard's mission critical Mobilization Readiness Tracking Tool and Volunteer Bulletin Board.

In support of the USCG, IDEAMATICS developed the Mobilization Readiness Tracking Tool (MRTT) and its complementary Volunteer Bulletin Board (VBB) web-enabled applications.

To meet the USCG’s operational requirements, IDEAMATICS needed an infrastructure partner that could provide a secure hosting solution, backup continuity of operations (COOP) capabilities, robust Internet access and 24/7 support. FISMA compliant hosting was critical to ensuring IDEAMATICS that the MRTT and VBB applications could provide a secure and convenient tool for USCG personnel use during contingencies.

Carpathia understood IDEAMATICS’ needs and worked to provide a solution that could more securely, conveniently and cost-effectively manage their hosting infrastructure. Carpathia determined the specific security, accessibility, backup and response time capabilities needed and developed an offering to meet the USCG requirements for responsiveness and uptime. After scanning for vulnerabilities and implementing the solution into the FISMA-compliant hosting solution, Carpathia and IDEAMATICS were able to create a system that the Coast Guard can rely upon.

Carpathia’s hands-on team of engineers and experienced staff delivered a secure FISMA-compliant hosted solution to meet the Coast Guard needs in support of its mission-critical MRTT and VBB web-enabled applications.

IDEAMATICS appreciates Carpathia's steady and reliable teamwork since 2007.  For more information about Carpathia, go to www.carpathia.com.

DECEMBER 2014 - IDEAMATICS, INC. SUPPORTS ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NAVAL SURFACE WARFIGHTING DEVELOPMENT CENTER
U.S. Navy to establish a Surface Warfare doctrine development, training and assessment command.

The Chief of Naval Operations will establish the Naval Surface Warfighting Development Center (NSWDC) to provide an effective and integrated approach in support of surface combat training readiness requirements in all warfighting domains. This is essential in meeting the operational and functional goals of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps.  The NSWDC will ultimately raise the tactical acumen of the Navy’s fighting forces and link combat readiness to resources thereby raising the Fleets’ tactical effectiveness.

On 4 December 2014, IDEAMATICS, Inc. was awarded a contract to conduct a manpower analysis of the NSWDC’s human resource requirements.  The manpower analysis effort supports development and management of mission-based metrics and recommendations for NSWDC’s ultimate force structure.  IDEAMATICS will provide this support to NSWDC by independently assessing the current workforce of all commands that will make up the future NSWDC and recommending how this workforce could support future manning.

IDEAMATICS and its partner, Whitney, Bradley & Brown, Inc. (WBB), will meet with the leadership and staff of designated commands in order to assess all missions, functions, and tasks of their current work forces.  Once the IDEAMATICS team completes billet analysis for each command, they will make recommendations regarding the manning requirements of NSWDC in order to accomplish all necessary missions, functions and tasks.  Finally, the IDEAMATICS team will analyze the extent to which available billets are aligned with the requirements of the NSWDC and make recommendations that will enable the Commander, NSWDC to develop a workforce optimized to achieve the vision of effective and integrated Surface Warfare doctrine development and implementation.

JULY 2014 - IDEAMATICS INC. DEPLOYS MRTT VBB MOBILE APP
The US Coast Guard announced the roll-out of a Mobile Device application version of its mission-critical web-enabled Mobilization Readiness Tracking Tool (MRTT) Volunteer Bulletin Board (VBB) developed by IDEAMATICS. This mobile application allows USCG members to view, apply for, and receive status updates for Volunteer Opportunities posted in MRTT VBB. The goal of the USCG MRTT VBB–M as a member resource is to provide Coast Guard members with easy access to opportunities, routine and emergency response, from the convenience of their mobile devices anywhere, anytime.

“The enhanced availability provided by the VBB-M benefits the USCG by casting a wider net, particularly important when personnel augments with specific skills are needed on short notice during any one of the many contingencies the USCG is called on to support,” stated Dr. David Danner, IDEAMATICS Inc., developer of the app.

The MRTT is the Coast Guard’s enterprise solution that can advertise, track and report mission critical requirements throughout the entire Coast Guard. This affords PSC, District DXR’s and Resource Unit Leaders working within IMTs or ICPs, greater flexibility in identifying and sourcing Coast Guard personnel assets. MRTT replaced a myriad of antiquated methods to accomplish this task. While not a replacement for TMT, or CGBI, MRTT synthesizes training, qualifications, and medical readiness information into one application, resulting in larger and more accurate candidate pools for any given mission critical requirement.

The Volunteer Bulletin Board allows a Coast Guard member to view current USCG requirements in MRTT, and apply for those that the member qualifies and is available for. Only valid USCG members can submit an application to be vetted by their Command, the supported Command and the sourcing agent.
